Peoples Security Bank celebrates student achievement at Mountain View High School

May 14, 2018

Peoples Security Bank and Trust Co. recently hosted a trivia event for the Peoples Security Financial Scholars Program, an initiative to bring critical financial literacy education to high school students across Mountain View School District. Peoples Security Bank and Trust Co. has partnered with EverFi, Inc., the nation’s leading education technology company, to bring this interactive, web-based financial management program to all high school students at no cost to the schools or taxpayers.

In the Jeopardy-like trivia game, the students were able to put to use everything they had learned throughout the course of completing the Peoples Security Financial Scholars Program. Nine out of more than 50 students that earned their Financial Scholar Certification played to test their knowledge while their classmates cheered them on from the audience. The event at Mountain View High School included remarks from Bonnie Phelps (Hop Bottom Branch Manager, Peoples Security Bank and Trust Co.) and John Cardenas (Schools Manager, EverFi). Bonnie also presented Dr. Elaine Chichura, Mountain View High School, with a Teacher Appreciation Certificate to thank her for all of the hard work and dedication she put forth implementing this program.

Bonnie Baker, Senior Vice President, Peoples Security Bank and Trust Co. commented, “To team up with an organization like EverFi and be able to present this program to the school districts in our area is very rewarding. Having the support of the administration and faculty made the program such a success and allowed the students to respond in a positive way. Peoples Security Bank looks forward to bringing this program to other school districts in our local communities.”

Dr. Elaine Chichura, Mountain View High School commented, “Financial literacy is a practical skill that will serve the students throughout their lifetimes. We are proud to take part in this important initiative.”

Lily Virbitsky, Mountain View High School student, commented, “EverFi explained all the things I was dreading about adult life in a manner that was both engaging and informative. I feel much more prepared to tackle life's financial obstacles after completing this course. I am extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to learn through EverFi because of how much I know it will help me in the near future.”

Madison Hegedty, Mountain View High School student, added “EverFi taught me things that I would have never learned by myself.  Thanks to EverFi I have plans to open my own checking account tomorrow after school.”

Powered by EverFi technology, the web-based learning platform uses the latest in new media technologies – video, animations, 3-D gaming, avatars, and social networking – to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation. High school students will become certified in over 600 topics in financial education, allowing them to become more informed, responsible citizens.

The Peoples Security Financial Scholars Program is a 10-unit course that offers 6-8 hours of programming aimed at teaching, assessing and certifying students in a variety of financial topics including credit scores, insurance, credit cards, student loans, mortgages, taxes, stocks, savings, 401k’s and other critical concepts that map to national financial literacy standards. This learning platform tracks knowledge gained as well as students’ attitudes and behaviors on these important issues. Students who successfully complete the course receive certification in Financial Literacy, a valuable mark of distinction on college applications and resumes.

Peoples Security Bank and RSVP Partner to Promote Literacy

Feb 14, 2018

Peoples Security Bank recently partnered with RSVP, a multi-service nonprofit organization that provides volunteer opportunities to help meet the region’s critical human needs, to help them continue their mission to foster a love for reading for their youngest community members.

Peoples Security Bank employees will adopt a local Head Start classroom to ensure that students are exposed to books and reading. Employees will visit the classroom and read storybooks to children through RSVP’s Family Literacy program.

To ensure that students have books of their own to take home and keep, the local Peoples Security Bank & Trust branch in King of Prussia will be holding a book drive beginning on FEBRUARY 14TH THROUGH MAY 31ST at 610 Freedom Business Center Drive, Suite 105, King of Prussia. New Storybooks in both English and Spanish are welcome. At the conclusion of the book drive, donations will be presented to the students, and may be the first books these children can call their own RSVP’s Family Literacy program works with Head Start classrooms throughout Montgomery, Chester and Delaware Counties to provide enthusiastic classroom volunteer readers to help engage young students in reading.

RSVP’s Family Literacy program coordinator Sandie Rollins stated: “Many of these low income families have no children’s books at home. We know that children often become more enthusiastic and successful learners when they are given access to books and one-on-one reading time.”

“Our goal is to collect enough books so that each child can take home several books to help build their home libraries,” said Peoples Security Bank’s Senior Vice President Ian Matlack. “We encourage community members to bring in their book donations and join us in supporting literacy.”

Sherilyn West, Family and Community Partnerships Supervisor at the MCIU Early Learning Programs has identified a local classroom in need of dedicated volunteers and books. She said: “I am very excited about this project. I really think it promotes the value of partnerships between local organizations and our youth in need.”

Women In Philanthropy Loan Program

Jun 13, 2017

Peoples Security Bank & Trust recently partnered with the Scranton Area Community Foundation’s Women in Philanthropy program in order to support entrepreneurship by women in our communities. The program was created to provide the funding and support necessary for women who are economically disadvantaged, or who are in transition, to achieve their goals of business ownership. Traditional lenders now have a place to send clients who may otherwise be turned away when they do not meet the lending criteria required by traditional lending institutions or even small business loan programs, including SBA loans. Unlike traditional lending, these micro-loans do not require a minimum credit score or collateral. By providing this opportunity, it allows an opportunity for non-traditional borrowers to create a credit history so that they can qualify for traditional lending opportunities in the future.

The program features favorable terms and conditions which benefit the business owner. It offers commercial loans as small as $1,000 and as large as $10,000 with loan terms up to 48 months. The loan program also helps the borrowers save for their future—the interest paid (at an interest rate of 6%) is put into a savings account and returned to the borrower after the loan has been repaid. In addition to the funding aspects, the program also provides training and education in business management and financial literacy, and one-on-one mentorship. Peoples Security Bank has committed $300,000 to fund these loans.
